Hi, I'm not the most tech savvy person so bear with me. About 3 years ago I purchased an external hard drive called WD (Western Digital) My Passport. This external hard drive could be formatted for both windows and mac and works beautifully with time machine back-up. Today, it appears it's only formatted for windows and the hard drive itself doesn't even look the same.

Instead I have opted for which I plan to purchase asap. This looks exactly the same as my My Passport and the specifications say it can be reformatted for mac so I am assuming my mac can at least read it for me to do that. The problem is it doesn't say what version of OSX. I currently have Snow Leopard on my Imac and Yosemite on my macbook. If anyone knows anything about how this work please help! The version of Mac OS is completely irrelevant. As long as the drive is visible to the Mac you can format it.

I have a WD My Passport for Mac drive, a MacBook Pro 2,2, and Mac OS X 10.6.4 Snow Leopard. I didn’t use this drive for backup purposes, I actually stored important files in it. I have a backup of the most sensitive files in it, but I will still take m several hours to get everything working again.

You should be able to format the My Passport drive to Mac file format as well. The main factor is if the Drive Utility on the Mac can recognise the drive. If it can then it shouldn't matter what file format the drive currently has on it you should be able to format for the Macs. And what do you mean by the drive doesn't look the same?

Do you mean what is listed by Finder (or not depending on the file format) or physically. Drives don't normally change appearance for no good reason so the only way it could physically alter is if the drive you have in your hand is not the one you had before. This is what 'WD My Passport' looks like today: It's not even compatible with mac anymore according to the specifications.

This is what 'WD Elements' looks like: Basically, WD Elements looks exactly like how My Passport used to look, visually, and unlike today's My Passport seems to work on mac which is why I was finding it confusing. Ah right, it sounded like you were talking about your current drive. Anyway I wouldn't believe Currys if they told me the sky was blue and grass was green. If you go to the WD website for the My Passport drive it says it comes pre-formatted for Windows but can be reformatted for other operating systems As I said above as long as the Mac Drive Utility recognises the drive it should be able to format the thing irrespective of what file system is already on the drive.

There is a My Passport drive for Macs. The only real difference between it and the 'Windows' version is the file format it uses out of the box and the software bundled with it will be Mac OS compatible rather than Windows. I use Macs at work and have used several USB drives with them. The only issue I have ever had is with a Toshiba drive that, for some reason we never did figure out, the Mac just could not see. So Drive Utility could not format it as it didn't know it existed. But with other drives I don't bother looking at the specs to see if it is Mac or Windows, I have yet to find a drive that the Mac can recognise and list in Drive Utility that it hasn't been able to format with the Mac file system.
