They will slow the performance somewhat of a Mac but, Avira is the least intrusive of what's available.
Unless you're planning on sharing files you downloaded from shady websites with Windows users, why would you even bother? I send files back and forth to my sister at work, who is on a Windows machine, and I've never felt the need to put an anti-virus program on my computer, primarily because I don't send her crap I downloaded from torrents or aggregated download sites or random blogs. What if she was? A Windows virus isn't going to do jack or squat on my computer. If I was using a PC as well, then it would be a problem, but since I'm not. Anti-virus software can't protect me from anything because there's nothing to protect me from. Windows viruses can't do any damage to OS X, and the actual problems that can affect Mac users, malware/adware, are downloaded and installed by the user, and there's no program on Earth that can prevent you from downloading something you shouldn't from some place you shouldn't.

If you stay away from some shareware sites (soft sonic, download.com,etc. Sites that bundle drivers for you instead of from the developers), wares sites, torrent sites, otherwise shady/dodgy sites and you should be malware free. The greatest danger on Macs to date are pop up scams that are tantamount to ads telling you to call a number and give your credit card so they can remote in and perform a pre-scripted smoke and mirrors show on your machine to make you panic because you didn't know any better - hands down the #1 mac threat out there and the only prevention is common sense.
